Grossmunster interior

Largest church in Zurich, Switzerland, where Ulrich Zwingli preached and led the Reform movement in the early 1500's. When he allowed the content and pace of the reforms to be controlled by the Zurich City Council, some of his more impatient followers broke away from his leadership and began a free church movement, under the control of the Word and the Spirit, not the state. These "Swiss Brethren" were called "Anabaptists" by their opponents for their insistence on believers baptism of adults. When the movement spread to the Netherlands, they became known as "Mennonites" because of the leadership there of Menno Simons.
