The aspen trunk in this cross are barriers, almost like prison bars, keeping us from entering the arena of light that lies beyond. Reminds me of the verse: "Now we see through a glass darkly, but then we shall see face to face." Or perhaps John's bright and hopeful vision of a "new heaven and a new earth."
