L'Anse aux Meadows rock

Long before Columbus, the Vikings established a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows on the tip of Newfoundland's northern peninsula. Just outside the museum/visitor center is a large, flat rock face. This image uses the colors and patterns of that ancient rock as the basis for a kaleidoscope cross.

Newfoundland is a special place for my wife and me. It's where we spent the first two years of our marriage almost 40 years ago. We were both elementary school teachers in a voluntary service program organized by the Mennonite church. Teachers and nurses were placed in the more isolated fishing villages that were unable to provide their own personnel to fill needed positions.

In the summer of 2004 we returned for only the second time to "the rock within the sea." This image comes from that pilgrimage--an experience we wish to repeat more frequently.
